concept sketch

January 23, 2010

This is an unfinished concept sketch of a fairy tale princess for a children’s story I’m working on. I was mostly testing shading, colors and computer “inking” with new tools.

Update: pencil sketch

I stumbled across a few of these images via google and i just had to take a look at this website! It’s all so amazing! I’m currently doing art GCSE and people seems to be the hardest subject ever-how do you do it????

Thank you for taking the time to comment, Bethany!

The answer is practice, practice, practice! My sister and I have been drawing pretty girls for years, so it’s probably the thing we’re best at.

I’ve seen artists who are excellent at one thing (landscapes, faces/hands/eyes, animals) but not so good at another, and artists who are excellent at light and shadow and color but not at shape or anatomy. It’s hard to master them all. We can’t all be William Bouguereau or Lord Frederic Leighton. But we can do our best : )

I think the reason people are so hard to get right is because we see them every day and our instincts tell us if there is something wrong (even if it’s small) with a face in a piece of art or a CG render.

there is a question my sisters and i are dying to ask – where do you get your inspiration from? the fairy tale princess is very Celtic looking to me and i can tell that the hair is Rapunzel 😛 but where did the auburn-haired princess come from??? 😀

Thanks, to you and your sisters, for your comment! : )

The fairy tale princess is sort of a mix of several princesses from classic fairy tales, from Sleeping Beauty to Rapunzel and so on. So she sort of borrows a trait from each of them; Rapunzel’s hair length, for example.

I’ve long been a big fan of many things Celtic, the music and intricate Celtic knots for starters, and I’ve got my share of Celtic blood. I’m amazed you saw the Celtic influence!

Why the reddish hair? Simple; I love red hair too! Ever since I was little. When I first started drawing her she almost looked blond, like almost every princess in classic stories, but her hair became redder and redder as her spunk made itself known.

How do you color your pictures??

After I scan in a pencil sketch and retrace the lines to sharpen them up, I fill in the flat color and then add the shading and highlights in Photoshop. I don’t know what I would do without Photoshop.
