pencil sketch – proportion test
Just another pencil sketch of the fairy tale princess. I meant to post this shortly after the color version. Sorry! I forgot. This was just a sketch to figure out the proportions of her face and build. Her face is still one of my favorites.

pencil sketch – sleeping beauty – 2
I was looking at some illustrations for Charles Perrault’s “La Belle au Bois dormant” (1697) and just had to try my hand at the rose vines. Some of the most beautiful illustrations I’ve seen for Sleeping Beauty have had the roses surrounding her bed, the long hair laying about her, and the wonderful details of a silky or velvet gown, quilt or bed-curtains, and it always helps when the bed has gothic arches and trefoils. And, yes, this one quickly became all about the hair just like the rest of my sketches of the fairy tale princess.

pencil sketch – sleeping beauty
I had an image in my head of the fairy tale princess sleeping on a bed of her own hair so I did this quick pencil sketch of the pose and hair position. It was probably inspired by some of the illustrations I’ve seen for Sleeping Beauty, Charles Perrault’s “La Belle au Bois dormant” (1697).
A colorized version can be found here.
Fairy tale princess – lighting test
Another computer inking, shading, lighting, and color test of the fairy tale princess. The background was just a quick sketch for mood. The first thumbnail is the shadows alone, the second shows the added highlights and blue light from one side, and the third is to show detail. I wanted to post this yesterday, but the shading took longer than expected. Sorry!
Here’s the original pencil sketch.
